On Oct. 27 at Cazenovia College, Tom Hughes (Natural Resource Steward Biologist for the Central and Finger Lakes Region of NYS OPRHP) guided a group of 17 in a YARE trainer workshop.
Indoor lessons included how to organize fishing clinics, best gear for working with first-time anglers, teaching kids how to fish, and filleting fish.
After a lunch provided by NY-AFS, outdoor lessons included fish sampling techniques such as seining, electrofishing, and trap-netting, fish identification, approaches to explaining fish biology to various audiences, and some actual fishing (and even some catching!).
Participants included a student and teacher from Nottingham H.S. [Syracuse City S.D.] and the Environmental Biology Program at Caz College, and all look forward to running a YARE event or two next year.
