Women In Fisheries

Women in Fisheries Mission Statement:

The mission of the Women in Fisheries Subcommittee (of the Diversity Committee) of the American Fisheries Society (AFS) New York (NY) Chapter is to inspire and empower women and people from underrepresented genders to succeed in professional fisheries careers. We strive to foster an encouraging environment for our members to advance their professional development goals. We recognize that mentorship and peer networking are vital factors to career success. Therefore, a core component of our work is to enhance these opportunities within our Chapter.

The fisheries community has historically been a male-dominated workforce, underrepresented by minority genders (including but not limited to cis and trans women, trans men, non-binary, genderqueer, agender). We work to provide opportunities for colleagues from minority genders to network in a safe and inclusive atmosphere. Please note there are no gender requirements for participation, though the vast majority of members are cis female. Participants at our events are expected to adhere to AFS Standards of Professional Conduct and Meeting Codes of Conduct at all times.
