Title:  Senior Research Support Specialist
Location:   USGS Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Science in Cortland, NY
Duration:  1 year, possible extension
Salary:  Minimum $40,000 depending on experience

The Research Foundation for the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY- ESF) seeks to hire Senior Research Support Specialists at the USGS Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Science in Cortland, NY.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
The Senior Research Support Specialists will perform routine fish culture for native Great Lakes fish species including: Performs routine fish culture for native Great Lakes fish species including (1) regular feeding of appropriate sizes and types of feed, (2) monitoring a healthy rearing environment through regular cleaning of fish tanks and avoids contamination of fish culture systems, (3) weekend duties that include feeding and/or managing automatic feeders, (4) assisting in maintaining appropriate dissolved oxygen and total dissolved gas level in rearing tanks, (5) assisting in maintaining disinfection systems, (6) making regular measurements and records of fish production data including growth, mortality, feeding levels and feed conversions, (7) assisting in determining optimal fish loading capabilities of rearing tanks, (8) recognizing signs of food health and needs for treatment of fungus or disease in fish, (9) treating with antibiotics and formalin to prevent disease and fungal mortality, (10) anticipating and planning to help meet needs for feed and culture supplies; and (11) assist with laboratory and fieldwork associated with release and evaluation of cultured fish..

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field
  • 1-2 years’ experience in fisheries science

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with culture of coregonid species
