Contributed by Touhue Yang, Posted 5/1/23: In the 2022 field season, the US Fish and Wildlife Service kickstarted their new Grass Carp Response Program in collaboration with the University at Buffalo and conducted their first fish surveys in eastern Lake Erie. Surveys consisted of electrofishing and netting at locations where grass carp were historically caught as well as exploring new areas. Both teams successfully caught and removed grass carp. The Service and University at Buffalo are the newest additions to the bi-national and multi-agency effort to capture and remove invasive grass carp throughout Lake Erie. This continued work will help improve the understanding of grass carp status in Lake Erie and provide necessary information for effective management actions.
